Settings mapping

Settings mapping template

As shown above, our team compiled all settings included by our currently supported platforms in order to find areas of overlap, as well as potentially unique settings.

The spreadsheet included:

  • The existing settings (by platform) word for word

  • A re-worded version written by our UX Writer on the project

  • Which category the setting fell under, based on our closed card sort study

  • All settings options that fell under the setting (yes vs. no, toggle on vs. off, etc.)

  • Which settings option or choice we as McAfee would recommend based on the selected persona

Card sorting

Our lead User Researcher on the project set up an open card sorting exercise for us, where we sorted through 100 social media settings and grouped them under categories of our own creation. We looked at the results as a team and worked with our UX Writer to create some categories to take into a closed user study card sort, which would ultimately guide the categorization used in our designs.

Due to time constraints and priorities, this card sort exercise was the only opportunity to do user research.

Extension concepts

After drafting the moderate fidelity concepts above (using existing elements within McAfee’s design system), the project was handed over to another team to carry out due to priorities shifting.

When the extension was needing to be integrated into McAfee’s Mobile One App, I took the project back; I breakdown the process for mobile below.

Designing for mobile

Evolving the original extension design

I referred to the extension experience while designing the Mobile One App version, while keeping in mind that certain elements would need to be specific to mobile, given it is a different form factor.

Due to time constraints and priorities, we didn’t have the opportunity to do any further testing or validation of the mobile screens. Due to this, I frequently reviewed high-fidelity progress (using McAfee’s existing design system elements) with our team of stakeholders.

As I designed, I noticed a number of opportunities for improvement. As I made improvements, we went back and also applied those improvements to the extension experience to ensure consistency.

Final mobile designs

Onboarding
Key improvement areas for onboarding that were applied in the mobile app were:

  • Allowing users to skip selecting a social media account.

  • Loading the third party sign in page within an iFrame to reduce friction.

Settings configuration
Key improvement areas for configuring settings that were applied in the mobile app were:

  • Spelling out when an account needs to be “reconnected” through a “Reconnect” label.

  • Including a “Recommended” label within settings so that users don’t lose track of what McAfee was recommending vs. what they had previously selected.

Changing persona selection
Key improvement areas for updating personas that were applied in the mobile app were:

  • Adding a disclaimer message informing users that if they update their persona, it will likely result in a number of settings recommendations across their linked social media platforms.

Future plans & considerations

  • Exploring the option for users to pick a unique persona per social media platform instead of the current one-size-fits-all approach.

  • Support additional social media sites, such as Tiktok.

  • Using a “no recommendations” state within a social media platform to suggest adding more social media platforms.
